LAX Transfer Costs in 2026: What Each Way Out of the Airport Charges, and Where Your Car Is Allowed to Meet You

At Los Angeles International the price of getting out of the airport is only half the answer. Since LAX moved taxi and app pickups to a remote lot, the other half is where your car is permitted to collect you — and that single rule changes both what you pay and how long you stand around with your bags. This page puts the published fares side by side with the pickup rules, as they stand on 25 August 2026.

The official taxi numbers, straight from the rate card

Los Angeles taxi fares are set by the city, not by the driver, and the rate card the Los Angeles Department of Transportation publishes gives the figures below (LADOT taxicab rates, checked 25 August 2026):

• $51.15 flat fare between LAX and Downtown Los Angeles — the zone bounded by Alameda Street, Santa Monica Boulevard, the Harbor Freeway and Cesar Chavez Avenue, plus Union Station and Chinatown.
• $4.00 airport surcharge on top of that flat fare, added to every trip leaving LAX.
• $16.50 minimum for any trip originating at LAX, however short.
• Everywhere else it is metered: $3.10 to start, roughly $2.97 a mile, and $32.10 an hour of waiting time — which is what a traffic jam on the I-405 actually costs you in a metered cab.

So the honest total for the single most-searched taxi ride at this airport, LAX to Downtown, is $55.15 before you tip. Add the customary 15–20% and you are at roughly $63–$66. That is the number to compare everything else against, and it is not the number most price pages quote, because most of them quote the flat fare and quietly leave out the surcharge.

The rule that decides your first twenty minutes: LAX-it

Taxis and standard app rides no longer come to your terminal. They collect passengers from LAX-it, a dedicated lot just east of Terminal 1. To reach it you either walk or ride the free green LAX-it shuttle, which you board at the inner curb outside baggage claim. Allow fifteen to twenty minutes for that leg: it is a shuttle ride plus a queue at the lot, not a step to the curb.

The exemption is the part worth knowing before you book. In the airport's own words, LAX-it "does not affect limousine or executive car pickup" — those vehicles "pick up from the baggage claim area on the outer curb", as do premium app tiers such as Uber Black, Uber Black SUV, Lyft Lux and Lyft Lux XL (LAX-it, flylax.com). Pre-arranged private transfers fall on that side of the line. Personal cars picking you up also use the outer curb in the Central Terminal Area.

Read that as a straight trade. A taxi or a standard Uber is cheaper on the fare and costs you a shuttle ride and a queue with your luggage. A pre-arranged car costs more and meets you at the terminal, which at LAX is a materially different arrival — see what a meet-and-greet actually includes.

Trains, buses, and the people mover that still is not open

• Metro rail — $1.75 one way, with fare capping at $5 a day and $18 a week (metro.net). The LAX/Metro Transit Center station opened on 6 June 2025 and is linked to every terminal by a free shuttle running about every ten minutes; from the station the C and K Lines take you into the network.
• FlyAway bus to Union Station — $12.75 one way, departures roughly every fifteen minutes between 05:00 and 23:00. Cash is not accepted on board: pay by contactless card, phone, the app, or a printed ticket.
• SkyLink, the automated people mover — not running. As of 25 August 2026 the 2.25-mile, six-station line is built and in testing but is not carrying passengers, and the project developer's announcement of 15 June put public service at 6 October 2026 at the earliest. Any itinerary you read that assumes you can ride a train between LAX terminals today is wrong; the free shuttles are still how you move between the terminals and the transit centre.

That last point matters for planning more than it looks. Guides written from press releases have been promising the people mover since 2023, and travellers arriving this month keep budgeting a five-minute train ride they cannot take.

What a private transfer costs to the three destinations people actually ask about

Beverly Hills is the interesting one. It is the shorter drive of the two inland runs, yet it goes up the I-405 and through Santa Monica Boulevard, so its worst case is closer to its best case than the Downtown run's is — and unlike a metered cab, a fixed fare does not tick upward while you sit in it. Which option fits which arrival

• Landing after 22:00, or on a long-haul with checked bags. The LAX-it queue is at its worst when several wide-bodies land together, and Metro's last useful connections thin out late. This is where a car waiting at the outer curb earns its premium — the reasoning is set out in late-night airport arrivals.
• Travelling light, going Downtown, no fixed appointment. $1.75 on the C or K Line is unbeatable value, and the free terminal shuttle makes it workable now that the transit centre is open.
• Family with car seats, or three or more people. Per head, a private van closes most of the gap on a taxi, and you skip the shuttle-with-a-toddler problem — see family transfers and car seats.
• Arriving for a meeting. The cost of being late is the only number that matters, and a flight-tracked pickup at the terminal is the one option whose clock starts when your plane lands rather than when you reach a lot.
